"TvStyle" view is a very useful plugin too (it can be found on rfactorcentral/simraceway) and i believe it is well worth downloading.
Apparently the map plugin is also good, (particularly when trying to learn a new track) though i am yet to try it.

Another good way to watch another driver is to hit the race button as per normal and then hit the numpad+ key to rotate through to the desired driver, doing it this way you can see what gear they are in etc without being in cockpit view.

I used to rely on maps a lot in my NFS days, but now I think it actually slows down the process of learning a track. It's good for arcade racers where you generally don't get a practice session and need to be reasonably fast without knowing the track, but I find in a sim where it's more important to properly memorise a track that having the map there means you pay less attention to the track and it takes longer to really get a feel for it. That's just me though. YMMV

Yeah I agree with what you said Almac about the map but the TvStyle gives you data on your screen with lap times and splits, a more accurate fuel guage, and a list of driver positions. If you get it for the fuel function alone it's worth it.

The map plugin is very useful for races with pit stops, because you get a much better view of exactly where other cars are on the track, and you can get a good idea of where you're going to be when you exit the pits. It also provides colour coordination of the leader (green), you (red), cars ahead (yellow), cars behind (blue), as well as the first 3 letters of their name (surname if using 2 'word' names).

It's much more of a strategic tool than an aid for learning a track. I recommend it 100%.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I use the map initially to see which way the next corner goes until I've learned the track enough that I don't need to refer to it any more, which usually takes 10 - 20 laps.

I don't get that much strategic use from the map after that but the TV-style info is good to have available.
