Track mismatches
If you can't log on the server because you are having terrain.tdf problems, copy the file from a working rfactor install (its in your gamedata\locations folder) to that folder in the rfactor install that stopped working
If you don't have the right track installed, please download it from our download thread.
Still having problems? Maybe you have too many files in our Locations folder. You only need commonmaps.mas and terrain.tdf - simply delete all the other files (not the folders).
Micro-jumps
If your instance of rFactor "jumps", you may need to enable both cores on your CPU (if you have a dual core processor). The easiest way to do this is to add +FullProc to your rfactor icon to launch the sim. To do this, simply right-click on your rfactor icon on your desktop and select properties. Go to the Target line and add +fullproc to the end - so it looks something like: "C:\Program Files\rFactor\rFactor.exe" +fullproc. Note where the quotes and spaces are... There have been a couple people who said their system didn't work quite right after this, but it's very rare and is highly recommended you do this adjustment - even if you don't have a problem. Your PC will work easier - especially at the start of the race and with our very large fields.
Sounds
If you're getting weird sounds (like wheelguns repeating) or the crowd singing while the race is going on, replace the normal sounds file in your sounds\ambient folder. For some reason some tracks are worse than others and cause this corruption.
Headlights reducing FPS
To improve night-time FPS, you can edit your PLR file. Make sure the following 2 lines are set (in the graphics options): Max Headlights = "4" and Headlights On Cars = "0" and reduce your shadows setting (in the display options).
If you change Headlights on cars to 0, it helps FPS a lot, but it doesn't look as realistic (lights don't reflect on cars).
Max Headlights shows how many headlights will appear to be on (that number of cars nearest you). You can increase this number, but it impacts FPS significantly if you have headlights on cars = 1. It's recommended you test this number, in many cases it can be raised to 8 or more.
TryMedia Error
If rFactor won't start when you click on it, and you get a "trymedia" error then you have an issue with trymedia (rFactor license) and your system clock. To fix it:
- open your Windows clock (in your taskbar at the bottom of the screen)
- Change year to one forward and click apply.
- Open rFactor game, it should start now.
- When game is open go to the clock and change it back to current year, and press apply. It's fixed now.
FPS drops when driving past the pits
If you have problems with fps when passing the pits and it's full of cars. Change this in your PLR. Looks something this in the PLR
Garage Detail="1.0000" // LOD multiplier when vehicle is in garage (0.01-1.00)
Change the value 1.000 to 0.5 or something even lower. Remember to keep the quotes
Preparing to Reinstall (prevent losing your license key)
- Copy the folder TryMedia from within: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ here
- Then when you have reinstalled everything just copy this folder back into the Application Data folder, and rFactor is running like before.

1. Multiplayer.ini Tweak
Find the following lines in your mutliplayer.ini file and change them to the values below. The multiplayer file can be found in rfactor\UserData\yourName\ folder.
Concurrent Server Updates="1000"
Default="400" This value relates to the number of server listed when you click on multiplayer. If you have trouble finding the xfactor server then ths value should help. 1000 means it will attempt to show 1000 multiplayer servers with each refresh.
2. Player.PLR Tweaks
Replace player with your name. Your Player.PLR file contain many settings you can tweak to improve the game. Your Player.PLR file can be found in rfactor\UserData\yourName\ folder.
Repeat Shifts="4"
Default="0" Repeat Shifts will eliminate annoying accidental repeat shifting in the heat of a great battle, this means you can shift gears without the fear of going from 3rd to 5th by accident. Other choices for repeat shift delay are listed in comments next to this setting. I use 4.
Allow Rearview In Swingman="1"
Default="0" If like me you use a swingman view to race, unless you set this value to "1" you won't be able to get the rear view mirrors to work. Swingman view is definded as viewing the car from behind and above the vehicle, much like allot of old arcade games.
Relative Fuel Strategy="1"
Default="0" Reletive Fuel strategy sets the way fuel get added to the car during a pit stop. Setting this value to "1" will add the required ammount of fuel at the pitstop just like in real life racing while setting the value to "0" means you leave pit lane after your stop with the nominated amount of fuel you requested in your setup. In theory using the value of "0" means you could leave pit lane with less fuel then you entered.
Keep Received Setups="3"
Default="1" Setting this to 3 allows you to keep all setups sent to you for all time. You have to manually clean out your received setups folder but setting this to "3" is good incase you forget to save a good setup someone sent you. Setups that drivers send you will be names after the driver they were sent from with a number appended to it, therefore Nibiru02 is a newer sent setup then Nibiru01
Standings Func="1"
Default="0" Allows you to scroll through the entire field in your pit menu and back to the start again. Usefull for looking at who is placed where during a race.
3. In Game Setup
In game setting that I use for my controller however these can be personalised to your prefered liking include:
Speed Sensitivity-5%, X Axis Sensitivity (Left to right wheel)- 0%
I also turn my Sound effect volume slightly higher then my engine volume so I can hear the tyres loosing grip and turn the in-game music low or off.
4. Other Tweaks
If you run more then one hard drive in your computer then a small performance gain can be made by shifting some of the loaded files to the other drive To do this you need to move the files and alter your config.ini file. The config.ini file can be found in the root directory of your rfactor install. By default it is C:\Program Files\rFactor\
Config.ini Tweaks
Move your tracks directory onto a second hard drive and share it amoung multiple installs of rfactor.
Copy your entire rfactor\GameData\Locations folder onto your second Hard Drive. for the purposes of this exercise we'll presume you have moved it from the above location to D:\Locations. Open config.ini and find the following line and change it to below
Default = TracksDir=GAMEDATA\LOCATIONS\
New = TracksDir=D"\LOCATIONS\
Don't forget to add the trailing "\"
This can be done with any or all pointers within the config.ini file to move your Replays, Logs, movies, etc directories.

If your like me and speed through the pits, you'll always be loosing money. That can prevent you from buying a new car to even changing upgrades.
You can get a @#$% load of cash by typing ISI_BABYFACTORY (using caps) in the chat box while in game on track while in garage. When you leave the track you will own all cars and get like a billion dollars.

At some stage most of you will get that annoying rattle gun noise when just sitting in the pits. First thing to try to get rid of it, is to copy your original rfactor/GameData/Sounds/Ambient folder into your new install.
If that doesn't work for you try downloading the files from the ftp site in "fresh rfactor files" folder, if you still have no luck remove the ambient folder altogether from your new install.

I would have probably stolen cars - it would have given me the same adrenaline rush as racing.

A great tweak that helps to avoid laggy drivers is open multiplayer ini file with wordpad
Edit Max Data Per Client="9999" to 128
Max Data Per Client="128" after that join a server you have high ping on and see the difference no more laggy cars
This edit also helps when host servers to not drain the upload speed
